The external links section is used for interviews, articles, other sites that the subject may have, etc. One problem with links to full galleries is that, many times, it's for a site that we're affiliates with, so it's helping someone else at our expense. Also, if we allowed galleries, it would become a free-for-all of people posting their own gallery links. There are gallery links in articles now, but that's because we can't police every article.
