Though large breasts were not traditionally valued in Japan,[1] buxom actresses had been admired in Japanese erotic cinema since at least the 1950s. In their The Japanese Film: Art and Industry, Anderson and Richie make mention of busty 1950s actress Michiko Maeda, and a nation-wide search for other breasty models which followed in the wake of her popularity.[3]
A representative of Emerge, a Japanese apparel company, explained, "Up until about the middle of the 1980s, nearly all women in Japan were either an A- or B-cup. Anybody who had large breasts was normally ashamed of them. And most of those who were big-breasted did what they could to make them look as small as possible." These efforts to cover up larger-than-average breasts became known as kyonyū kakure (巨乳隠れ), or "hiding big tits".[1]
Nevertheless breasts were popular in erotic entertainment. Many stars of the pink film, a genre of theatrical softcore film which flowered in the 1960s, were known for their large breasts for Japan at the time. Tamaki Katori the star of The Flesh Market (1962), the first pink film recalled, "I hadn't been able to make it in mainstream movies because people said with my baby face and big boobs I was unbalanced, but those attributes turned out to be exactly what the pink movie business was looking for."[4]

Naomi Tani, the SM Queen of the 1960s and 1970s took her stage name (谷 - Tani or "Valley") as a pun on cleavage. After retiring from the film industry, Tani opened a restaurant which she named "Ohtani" (or Big Cleavage).[5]
In their Japanese Cinema Encyclopedia: The Sex Films, the Weissers point out a "notable cultural trend" in Japan during the mid-1980s: the advent, and popularity of big-breasted girls.[6]
Eri Kikuchi, who debuted in AVs (Adult Videos) in 1984, was one of the first Japanese adult performers whose career was based mainly on the size of her large breasts.[7]
Nikkatsu capitalized on this change in cultural preference by naming as their Roman Porno "Queen of SM" for 1986, Ran Masaki whose most notable feature was her 100cm (39in) bust.[6]
According to AV historian Noriyuki Adachi, the "Big Bust Boom" (巨乳ブーム - "Kyonyu Buumu") was set "on fire" with the 1989 AV debut of Kimiko Matsuzaka, who had an advertised 110.7cm bust.[8]
Mariko Morikawa in 1994, Morikawa's career has included pregnancy and MILF genres. Japanese Wikipedia reports that Morikawa was the first successful "plumper" model in Japan's AV world.[9]

By the mid-1990s, a "Big Bust" genre had become established in adult entertainment in Japan with video companies, magazines such as D-Cup Japan, and websites dedicated exclusively to Big Bust models.
