Timmie Jean Lindsey was the first person to receive breast implants.
Lindsey was a 30-year-old mother of six when she went to Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston to have a pair of floral tattoos removed from her breasts. By then her breasts were sagging after having so many children and when offered by doctors the opportunity to increase her bust, she jumped at the chance. In the spring of 1962, Lindsey became the first person in the world to have breast implants.
She has since reported hardening of the breasts and acute pain as well as other ailments that opponents of the surgery claim are caused by the silicone.
At 75, she still works the night shift at a care home on the Houston outskirts, the latest in a succession of lowly paid jobs she has held down to help support a family that has expanded from ten children to 16 great-grandchildren.
