Swarnamalya, a trained Indian classical Bharatanatyam dancer is also an actress and TV anchor. She is a graduate from MOP Vaishnav College where she served as student president. She went on to do her Diploma in Acting for Camera from San Jose State University, California. She also has a Masters in Bharathanatyam and Ph.D. in Dance History from Madras University. She received initial training with Smt. K. J . Sarasa for 10 years, and had her further learning with Bhagavatulu Sri. B. Seetharama Sharma of Kalakshetra.
Swarnamalya started out performing in stage plays. She first gained fame from the Sun TV show Ilamai Pudhumai. Later, she made her film debut in Maniratnam's Alaipayuthey, where she played the role of Shalini's elder sister Poorni. She played supporting roles in films such as Mozhi and Engal Anna. Over the years, she has anchored several shows, acted in films across various languages and performed on many stages all over the world.
Swarnamalya got married in 2002 to Arjun, and moved to the United States. One year later, Swarnamalya returned to India to act in movies. This reportedly was what eventually led to her divorcing her husband.
Currently, Dr. Ganesh is a Fulbright Visiting Scholar, minoring in World Arts, Cultures and Dance, at UCLA.[1]
