Chantal Claret (born February 21, 1982 in Berkeley, California, USA) is the lead singer and songwriter for the rock and power pop band Morningwood.[1] She was raised in New York City until the age of five, and then moved to Los Angeles.
Her singing style has been compared to singers such as Chrissie Hynde, Christina Amphlett, Debbie Harry, Shirley Manson,[2] and Beth Ditto[3]
At her live shows she is known to bring people up on stage and have them strip for a song called "Take Off Your Clothes". Claret also wears a gun holster as a microphone holder.
As a teenager, she was a promoter for several clubs in New York.[4]
Prior to meeting Pedro Yanowitz and starting Morningwood with him, Claret says she was attending film school with an eye on directing music videos.[5] She directed the Morningwood video for "Take Off Your Clothes". In 2002 Claret appeared in the short film, American Mod.[6]
She co-wrote a monthly advice column in Alternative Press along with Riley Breckenridge, the drummer from Thrice, that ended in December 2007.
On January 18, 2008 she married Jimmy Urine, lead singer of Mindless Self Indulgence.[7][8]
