Beverly Powers (aka Beverly Hills; born Beverly Jean Montgomery on August 7, 1939) is an American former burlesque dancer, actress, and ordained Christian minister.[1][2]
Early life
Powers was born Beverly Jean Montgomery on August 7, 1939, in Los Angeles, California.[1][2]
Burlesque and dance career
She began her career at age 17 as a chorus dancer at the Tropicana and Sands hotels in Las Vegas.[2] By 1959, she had transitioned to burlesque as a striptease artist performing under the stage name Miss Beverly Hills. She headlined at the Largo Club on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles.[2][3]
Acting career
Powers made her film debut in Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), playing a nightclub stripper credited as Miss Beverly Hills.[1] She appeared in several films during the 1960s and 1970s, including three with Elvis Presley: Kissin' Cousins (1964) as Trudy, Viva Las Vegas (1964) as a showgirl (uncredited), and Speedway (1968) as Mary Ann Ashmond (as Miss Beverly Hills).[1] Other notable film roles include Mrs. Phipps in The Comedy of Terrors (1963, as Beverly Hills), a burlesque dancer in Kisses for My President (1964), Sylvia in The Power (1968, as Miss Beverly Hills), Sheree in More Dead than Alive (1969), Harriet Williams in Invasion of the Bee Girls (1973), and an uncredited topless swimmer in Jaws (1975).[1] On television, she appeared in multiple episodes of The Jack Benny Program (1964–1970, often as Cue Card Lady or similar roles), as well as guest spots on Emergency! (1972), The Mod Squad (1973), Barnaby Jones (1973), McMillan & Wife (1975), Bronk (1976), and Fantasy Island (1979).[1] She retired from acting in the early 1980s after about 25 years in the industry.[4]
Ministry
In 1987, Powers relocated from Southern California to Maui, Hawaii, where she founded The Living Ministry, a nondenominational grassroots ministry.[2][5] Ordained as a licensed Christian minister, she became known as Reverend Beverly Powers (or "Rev. Bev").[2] She served as pastor at the Sheraton-Maui Resort for five years and co-pastored at Lahuiokalani Congregational Church in Kaanapali for six years.[3] She has also worked as a chaplain at Maui Memorial Hospital and in Maui's Prison Ministry, performed over 2,700 weddings and vow renewals, and founded multiple churches across the Hawaiian Islands.[5][4] After 25 years of preaching, she retired from the pulpit but remained active in ministry as of the mid-2010s.[5] Notably, unlike some other erotic entertainers who later became religious, Powers does not lament or deride her former career.
Personal life
As of 2026 Powers is widowed and has two grown sons.[4] In 2014, she published her autobiography, Passing the Baton of Light: Saving a Family Tree, which details her 25 years in Hollywood entertainment and her subsequent 25 years in ministry.[4][6]
