Liz Hatch is an American road cyclist. Born in June 1980, she was not a child prodigy of the road racing scene. In fact, aside from messing about a little with the bikes in her father’s garage, her first involvement with the sport came from watching it on TV. She was 24 before she ever even rode a bike and was competing very shortly afterwards.
In 2006 she began her first ever cycling season, travelling to Belgium to compete as an amateur over there. Her results were encouraging enough that she spent the following season back in the USA, competing as a one woman team sponsored by Vanderkitten. In 2008, the Vanderkitten Racing Team she had helped to found went on to win the prestigious USA Crits team title. It was also in 2008 when Liz found a degree of individual fame after a chance meeting with a Maxim editor, who was also a keen cyclist, lead to her doing a now famous / infamous (depending who you talk to) photo shoot for the magazine.
Liz was dropped from the Vanderkitten team during the 2009 season. She then moved back to the European circuit, racing for the Belgian Lotto Ladies outfit whilst also contributing a blog to Cycling News. Liz retired from professional racing in 2011 after being diagnosed with glandular fever in late 2010. However, having made a full recovery, she came out of retirement and made a comeback with the CyclelivePlus-Zannata Ladies Team in 2013.
Professional career
She began racing in 2006 and made her first trip to Belgium that summer. Hatch became the first member of the Vanderkitten Racing team in 2007 but was released in the middle of 2009. For the 2010 season, she has signed with the Belgium-based Lotto Ladies professional team.
