Amber Lee Ettinger (born October 2, [1982][1][2]) is an American actress and model best known as Obama Girl in her online video "I Got a Crush... on Obama" — referring to then-candidate Barack Obama — which has earned her scores of media appearances, from a part in a Saturday Night Live sketch with Fred Armisen as Obama to an interview on Geraldo at Large with Geraldo Rivera.
Early career
A native of Hazleton, Pennsylvania of German, Italian, Swedish and Irish ancestry[3], Ettinger moved to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology to study fashion and clothing design, having expressed hopes to create her own clothing line and other business ventures.[4] Early in her career, Ettinger was crowned Miss NYC in the 2003 Miss Hawaiian Tropic pageant,[5] later augmenting that title with a nod as Miss Howard TV in June 2007.[6] It was her appearance on Howard TV that brought her to the attention of Leah Kaufman and Ben Relles, who then contacted her about appearing in "I Got a Crush... on Obama." She has also appeared in a video for The Onion News Network,[7] as well as the music video for the John Popper Project song "Lapdance."[8]
Viral videos
Ettinger appeared in "I Got a Crush... on Obama," which was posted by Barely Political to YouTube in June 2007 and the video caught on. More recently, she appeared in a new video called "Hillary! Stop the attacks! Love, Obama Girl" released on March 25th, 2008.[9] On May 7, 2008, Barely Political posted a YouTube video with Obama Girl and former Democratic and Libertarian Party presidential candidate, Mike Gravel, entitled "Mike Gravel Lobbies for the Obama Girl Vote."[10] In the video, Gravel tries to persuade Obama Girl to switch her support from Obama to him. Her response near the end of the video is, "I'll think about it."
In late September 2008 Obama Girl made a YouTube video with Independent Candidate Ralph Nader in which he argues that he should be included in the debates. The video was a spoof of conventional sit-coms and was called "The Obama Girl and Ralph Nader Show." Also featuring former Governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura, the video followed what would happen if Obama Girl and Ralph Nader shared an office.[11]
Other projects
Beyond her Barely Political and modeling career, in late 2008, Ettinger launched a music career. Staying true to her online roots, her first album, "Queen of the Web," will be made available only online. The first single, "Second Time," was released in August of 2008.
Amber Lee is also in the process of working on a vintage-inspired jewelry line with her mother, Roseann, called "Inspired by Amber."
