Madonna is known for frequently changing her look and clothing style as well as playing with taboos, which often lead to the revival or creation of fashion trends. In 1987, for example, she re-introduced fishnets which had been out of fashion at that time.[2][3] On October 21, 1992, she published her book Sex which showed her in provocative and fetish-related poses photographed by Steven Meisel. The pictures contained nippleless, open bust and other PVC and leather clothes, with allusions to BDSM, bondage and watersports.[4]

The history of Madonna's style also shows many links to haute couture fashion. In her 1985 film Desperately Seeking Susan, she wore a corset dress by Jean-Paul Gaultier — the designer who later created the costumes for her 1990 Blond Ambition tour.[5] The Cone Bustier of this tour became so famous that it was even shown in exhibitions at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2000 and 2002[6][7] and is considered Gaultier's "most famous contribution to modern fashion".[8] On September 24, 1992, Madonna also modelled for Jean-Paul Gaultier at a fashion show in Los Angeles, wearing an open bust pinstripe dress exposing her breasts. The show raised $750,000 for amfAR, the American Foundation for AIDS Research.[9]

Madonna also wore pieces of other haute couture labels at various occasions, for instance Dior, Dsquared2, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace.[8] On May 21, 2008, she visited the premiere of I Am Because We Are at the film festival in Cannes, France,[10] wearing a black and silver sequined see-through dress from the spring 2007 couture collection by Chanel.[11] In late 2008, she posed for an advertisement of Louis Vuitton, shot again by Steven Meisel.[12]
