An island, not a city
The first thing to understand about Bali is that it's spread across an island, so "where" matters more than in a single-city market. Seminyak is the upscale beach strip and carries the highest concentration — premium independents and agencies, walkable to Petitenget and the Oberoi. Kuta and Legian are the mid-market, package-tourist heart with denser, cheaper listings. Canggu is the younger digital-nomad strip around Berawa and Echo Beach, heavy on villa outcall. The villa-outcall culture
Because so many visitors stay in private villas rather than hotels, outcall to your villa is the default arrangement across most of the island — particularly in Canggu, Ubud and the Seminyak villa belt. It sidesteps the hotel-desk question entirely, which is part of why it dominates here. If you're in a hotel instead, check it's guest-friendly before arranging an incall to your room.
What you'll pay
Pricing is in Indonesian rupiah, cash, and the spread is wide by strip — Kuta and Legian at the lower end, Seminyak and the premium villas at the top. Agree the number first and settle in person; the distances between strips are real, so factor travel time into any outcall, especially Ubud, which is an hour or more from the southern beaches.

WhatsApp is the channel. Keep the first message short and concrete — your villa or hotel area, the strip you're in, and a rough time. English is widely used across the tourist areas, so language is rarely the barrier.
Staying safe
The risk here is the same one everywhere: never wire a deposit to hold a booking with someone you haven't met — that's where newcomers lose money.
