Hayek was born in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico to Sami Hayek, a Mexican oil company executive, and Diana Jiménez, an opera singer. Hayek's paternal grandparents were Mexicans of Lebanese descent, while her mother is of Spanish descent. Reflecting her Arabic heritage, her first name literally means ‘peace’ or ‘calm’ in Arabic. Raised in a wealthy, devoutly Catholic family, she was sent to the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau, Louisiana, at the age of 12. She was also an accomplished gymnast aspiring to compete in the Olympics but her father prevented her from being recruited by the Mexican national team. The religious sisters running the Academy ejected Hayek citing behavioral problems, so she returned to Mexico. She was later sent to live with her aunt in Houston, Texas, where she stayed until she was 17. She attended college in Mexico City, where she studied International Relations at the Universidad Iberoamericana. To the chagrin of her family, she dropped out to pursue a career as an actress.

At the age of 23, Hayek landed the title role in Teresa (1989), a successful Mexican telenovela that made her a star in Mexico. In 1994, Hayek starred in El Callejón de los Milagros (Miracle Alley), which has won more awards than any other movie in the history of Mexican cinema. For her performance Hayek was nominated for an Ariel Award.

Hayek moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1991 to study acting under Stella Adler, hoping for a career in Hollywood. Robert Rodriguez and his producer wife Elizabeth Avellan soon gave Hayek the break she needed, a starring role opposite Antonio Banderas in 1995's Desperado. The movie caught Hollywood's attention, as moviegoers proved to be as dazzled by Hayek as Rodriguez had been. Due to Salma's loyalty to the director she would later decline playing the role Catherine Zeta-Jones eventually took in The Mask of Zorro after Rodriguez abandoned the project. She has also appeared in the Spy Kids trilogy.

Hayek followed her success in Desperado with a brief but memorable role as a vampire queen in From Dusk Till Dawn, where she provocatively danced on a table before killing Quentin Tarantino's character. In 1999 she co-starred in Will Smith's big-budget Wild Wild West, and played a supporting role in Kevin Smith's Dogma. In 2000 she had an uncredited acting part opposite Benicio Del Toro in Traffic.

She earned a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her performance. Following Frida, in 2003 she reprised her role from Desperado by appearing in the final film of the Mariachi Trilogy, Once Upon a Time in Mexico. At the urging of a friend she went ahead, and quickly concluded that the poor reputation of the porn industry was undeserved. Her first hardcore scene was a gang bang with five men and she proved a willing performer - Young's specialties became group sex and the 'facial' cum shot. The scenes appeared in a number of European magazines and reports became a scandal story in the British tabloid press. The photos also brought her to the attention of Hans Moser (aka Sascha Alexander), an established porn film director and producer, and magazine publisher. After he’d made all the necessary arrangements with her agent, Sarah flew to Hannover, Germany in September 1989 to meet him; and perform in the first of many films for him. They were married on 13 January, 1991 in Las Vegas, USA.

In early 1992 Sarah underwent breast enhancement surgery, giving her the voluptuous figure which would be a major factor in her increasing popularity. At a time when it was still unusual for a British model to feature regularly in hardcore pornography, Young starred in over 200 films alongside some of the best known porn actors of the time, winning a number of industry awards. She also went to Hungary to perform in a series of films for director Mario Bianchi (as Nicholas Moore), one of which, ''Sexy Killer'', was loosely based on the 1990 Luc Besson film ''Nikita''.

Having spent her career performing in, writing, producing and directing films, in 1997, as the porn industry began to switch to lower budget movies, Sarah Young decided to retire from the business. She has since divorced Sascha Alexander and is now studying law in the USA, hoping to become a lawyer.
