When she was three years old her father, a lawyer who was in practice with future New Jersey governor Robert B. Meyner, died of a heart attack while driving in a car with his wife and daughter. After his death her mother worked as a school teacher and in 1939, when Vera Palmer remarried, the family moved to Dallas, Texas. Jayne's desire to become an actress developed at an early age. After high school she studied drama and physics at Southern Methodist University.

In 1950, at age 16, Jayne married Paul Mansfield. Her acting aspirations were temporarily put on hold with the birth of her first child, Jayne Marie Mansfield, on November 8, 1950. She juggled motherhood with classes at the University of Texas at Austin, then spent a year at Camp Gordon, Georgia during her husband's service in the United States Army. She attended UCLA during the summer of 1953, and then went back to Texas for fall quarter at Southern Methodist University in Texas. Back in Dallas, she became a student of actor Baruch Lumet, father of director Sidney Lumet and founder of the Dallas Institute of the Performing Arts. Jayne won several beauty contests while living in Texas; these included Miss Photoflash, Miss Magnesium Lamp and Miss Fire Prevention. The one title she turned down was Miss Roquefort Cheese because she said it "just didn't sound right."

==Acting career and celebrity==

Jayne's husband hoped the birth of their child would discourage her interest in acting. When it did not he agreed to move to Los Angeles in late 1954 to help further her career. Between a variety of odd jobs, including candy vendor at a movie theatre, Jayne studied drama at UCLA. Her movie career began with bit parts at Warner Bros. She had been signed by the studio after one its talent scouts discovered her in a production at the Pasadena Playhouse. Mansfield had small roles in ''Female Jungle'' (1954), and in ''Pete Kelly's Blues'' (1955) which starred Jack Webb.

In 1955 Paul Wendkos offered her the dramatic role of Gladden in ''The Burglar'', his film adaptation of David Goodis' novel. The film was done in film noir style, and Mansfield appeared along side Dan Duryea and Martha Vickers. ''The Burglar'' was released two years later when Mansfield's fame was at its peak. She was successful in this straight dramatic role, though most of her subsequent film appearances would be either comedic in nature or capitalize on her sex appeal. After two more movies at Warner Bros., one of which gave her a minor role as Angel O'Hara, a hitman's mistress, opposite Edward G. Robinson in ''Illegal'' (1955).

===Career high===
In 1955, she went to New York and appeared in a prominent role in the Broadway production of George Axelrod's comedy ''Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?'' (1955). ''The New York Times'' described as the "commendable abandon" of her scantily clad rendition of Rita Marlowe in the play, "a platinum-pated movie siren with the wavy contours of [[Marilyn Monroe]].

Mansfield then returned to Hollywood and starred in Frank Tashlin's film ''The Girl Can't Help It'' (1956). On May 3, 1956 she signed a long-term contract with 20th Century Fox. She then played a straight dramatic role (albeit as a stripper) in ''The Wayward Bus'' (1957). With her role in this film she attempted to move away from her dumb blonde image and establish herself as a serious actress. This film was adapted from John Steinbeck's novel: the cast included Dan Dailey and [[Joan Collins]]. The role was a change of pace from Mansfield's stereotyped persona and the film enjoyed reasonable success at the box office.

She won a Golden Globe in 1957 for ''Most Promising Newcomer - Female'', beating [[Carroll Baker]] and [[Natalie Wood]], for her performance as a "wistful derelict" in ''The Wayward Bus''. It was "generally conceded to have been her best acting", according to ''The New York Times'', in a fitful career hampered by her flamboyant image, squeaky voice ("a soft-voiced coo punctuated with squeals"), almost comically voluptuous figure, and limited acting range.

She then reprised her role of Rita Marlowe in the 1957 movie version of ''Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?'', co-starring Tony Randall and Joan Blondell. ''The Girl Can't Help It'' and ''Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?'' were popular successes in their day and are largely considered classics. Her fourth starring role in a Hollywood film was ''Kiss Them for Me'' (1957) in which she received prominent billing alongside Cary Grant. However, in the film itself she is little more than comedy relief while Grant's character shows a preference for a sleek, demure redhead portrayed by fashion model [[Suzy Parker[[. ''Kiss Them for Me'' was a box office disappointment and would prove to be her final starring role in a mainstream Hollywood studio film.

===Career decline===
Despite her monumental publicity and public popularity, good roles dried up for Mansfield after 1959, the year after she married Mickey Hargitay, a Hungarian-born bodybuilder who had been Mr. Universe 1955. The actress, nevertheless, kept busy in series of low-budget films mostly filmed in the Europe. These showed off as much of her anatomy as possible, but provided little display of her acting or comedic talents. Mansfield remained a highly visible personality even with these career setbacks.

Fox tried to cast Mansfield opposite Paul Newman in his (failed) first attempt at comedy, ''Rally Round the Flag, Boys'', but the actor preferred her ''Wayward Bus'' co-star Joan Collins. Among other unrealized projects, Joe Pasternak was to produce ''Three Blondes'', a film based on a French novel by Pierre Dassete that (hopefully) would have co-starred Mansfield, Lana Turner and Kim Novak. However, the project was dropped before production began.

In 1960 Fox loaned her out to appear in two independent gangster thrillers in England. These were ''Too Hot to Handle'' which was directed by Terence Young and co-starred Karlheinz Böhm, and ''The Challenge'' co-starring Anthony Quayle. Fox also lined up ''It Happened in Athens''. The Olympic-themed movie was filmed in Greece and would not be released until 1962. Despite receiving top billing in ''It Happened in Athens'' Mansfield was relegated to a colorful, scantily-clad supporting role.

===''Promises! Promises!''===
In 1963, the comedian turned producer-screenwriter Tommy Noonan needed an actress, who would get naked in his second produced movie ''Promises! Promises!''. [[Marilyn Monroe]] was first considered. But Mansfield, who had bigger breasts than Monroe got the role of ''Sandy Brooks'', a desperate wife who is trying to get pregnant. Noonan starred in the movie as Mansfield's husband ''Jeff Brooks''. Mansfield appeared in three nude scenes in the movie. The scenes exposed Mansfield's breasts and buttocks. Photographs of a naked Mansfield on the set were published in ''[[Playboy]].'' In one notorious set of images Mansfield stares at one of her breasts, as does her male secretary and a hair stylist, then grasps it in one hand and lifts it high. The sold out issue resulted in an obscenity charge for Hugh Hefner which was later dropped. (In Kenneth Anger's book ''Hollywood Babylon II'', a photo from an unknown source reveals a shot from the movie's set in which Mansfield displays prominent pubic hair.) ''Promises! Promises!'' was banned in Cleveland, but it enjoyed box-office success elsewhere. Because of the film's success, Jayne landed on the Top 10 list of Box Office Attractions for that year.

===Career end===
By the early 1960s Mansfield's reign in Hollywood was effectively over. One critic summed up her last decade of film vehicles as "one of the most consistently awful in cinema history". The decision to do nude scenes had ruined any chance of her return to prestige productions. Even Mansfield seemed stunned by her sudden shift in professional status, saying, "Once you were a starlet. Then you're a star. Can you be a starlet again?"

In 1963 she appeared in the low-budget West German movie ''Homesick for St. Pauli'' (a.k.a. ''Heimweh nach St. Pauli'') with Austrian born schlager singer Freddy Quinn. Mansfield played Evelyne, a sexy American singer who traveling to Hamburg by ship. She is followed by an Elvis-like American pop star (Quinn). Mansfield sang two German songs in the movie, though her speaking voice was dubbed.

The album cover depicted a bouffant-coiffed Mansfield with lips pursed, breasts barely covered by a fur stole, and posing between busts of the Russian composer and the Bard of Avon.

Her bosom was so much a part of her public persona that talk-show host Jack Paar once welcomed the actress to ''The Tonight Show'' by saying, "Here they are, Jayne Mansfield" (the line was written for Paar by Dick Cavett). Early in her career, the prominence of her breasts was considered problematic, leading her to be cut from her first professional assignment, an advertising campaign for General Electric, which depicted several young women in bathing suits relaxing around a pool.

===Wardrobe malfunctions===
In April 1957, her breasts were the feature of a notorious publicity stunt intended to deflect attention from [[Sophia Loren]] during a dinner party in the Italian star's honor. Photographs of the encounter were published around the world. The most famous image showed Loren raising a contemptuous eyebrow as the American actress, who was standing between Loren and her dinner companion, Clifton Webb, leaned over the table and allowed her breasts to spill over her low neckline and expose one nipple.

A similar incident, resulting in the full exposure of both breasts, occurred during a film festival in Berlin, when Mansfield was wearing a low-cut dress and her second husband, Mickey Hargitay, picked her up so she could bite a bunch of grapes hanging overhead at a party; the movement caused her breasts to erupt out of the dress. But her reliance on the racy publicity that had set her path to fame would also prove to be her downfall. Fox didn't renew its contract with her in 1962.

As its name implies, the mansion's interior and exterior color scheme was largely what would become the actress's signature color, with cupids surrounded by pink fluorescent lights, pink furs in the bathrooms, a pink heart-shaped bathtub, and a fountain spurting pink champagne. Hargitay, who was a plumber and carpenter before he got into bodybuilding, built its famous pink heart-shaped swimming pool. Engelbert Humperdinck bought the Pink Palace in the 1970s. In 2002, he sold it to developers, and the house was demolished in November of that year.

==Death==
After an engagement at the Gus Stevens Supper Club in Biloxi, Mississippi, Mansfield, Brody, and their driver, Ronnie Harrison, along with the actress's children Miklós, Zoltan, and Mariska, headed in Stevens' 1966 Buick Electra 225 to New Orleans, where Mansfield was to appear in an early morning television interview. On June 29, at approximately 2:25 a.m., on U.S. Highway 90, the car, which was reportedly going 80 miles per hour, crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer that had slowed down because of a truck spraying mosquito fogger. The children survived with minor injuries, but the adults were killed instantly. The car was returned to its owner, Gus Stevens, who eventually sold it. It was in a museum in Florida for several years but now is owned by a Mansfield fan in North Carolina.

While her husband was in the Merchant Marine during World War II, Norma Jeane Dougherty moved in with her mother-in-law, and started to work in the Radioplane Company factory (owned by Hollywood actor Reginald Denny), spraying airplane parts with fire retardant and inspecting parachutes. Army photographer David Conover was scouting local factories, taking photos for a ''YANK'' magazine article about women contributing to the war effort. He saw her potential as a model and she was soon signed by The Blue Book modeling agency. In his book ''Finding Marilyn'', Conover claimed the two had an affair that lasted years. Shortly after signing with the agency, Monroe had her hair cut, straightened, and lightened to golden blonde.

She became one of Blue Book's most successful models, appearing on dozens of magazine covers. In 1946, she came to the attention of talent scout Ben Lyon. She became a weather presenter at a local San Diego television station. Because of her heavy schedule, she decided to leave college. Her marriage broke up and she moved with her two children to Dallas, Texas, where she modeled for Neiman-Marcus and worked as a cocktail hostess, intending to move on to New York City from there.

Instead, she moved back to California. She found a place in Los Angeles and started making the rounds of the movie studios. She was cast in bit parts in two films and television shows, ''Bewitched, McHale's Navy, The Hollywood Palace'', and ''The Virginian''. She actually auditioned for the part of "Mary Ann" on ''Gilligan's Island'' but lost out to Dawn Wells. "La Toti" was the nickname given to Vergara by her five brothers and sisters and many cousins, including television news anchor and reporter Carlos Vergara, who currently works for WTVJ in Miami, Florida. She grew up on her father's farm in Colombia, where for recreation and exercise, she liked to swim in a river and ride horses. She came from a moderately well-off family in Colombia and was sent to private bilingual (Spanish/English) schools there, including elementary school. She got married at the age of 18, and she gave birth to her son Manolo in 1991 at the age of 19. The marriage did not last very long, and then she studied dentistry at a college in Colombia for three years.

Vergara was discovered by a photographer while walking a Colombian beach. Soon, she was presented with attractive offers in modeling and TV work, and followed that course. She made her first public appearance at the age of 17 in a Pepsi commercial that was widely telecast all over Latin America. ==Early life==

Ann-Margret was born in Stockholm, the daughter of Anna (née Aronsson) and Gustav Olsson, a native of Örnsköldsvik. While young she moved with her parents to Valsjöbyn, Jämtlands län, which she later described as a small town "of lumberjacks and farmers high up near the Arctic Circle". Her father worked in the United States during his youth and moved there again in 1942, working with the Johnson Electrical Company, while his wife and daughter stayed behind.

Ann-Margret and her mother moved to the United States in November 1946, and her father took her to Radio City Music Hall on the day they arrived. They settled just outside of Chicago in Wilmette, Illinois. She became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1949 and took her first dance lessons at the Marjorie Young School of Dance, showing natural ability from the start, easily mimicking all the steps. Her parents were supportive and her mother handmade all her costumes. Ann-Margret's mother worked as a funeral parlour receptionist after her husband suffered a severe injury on his job. While a teenager, Ann-Margret appeared on the Morris B. Sachs Amateur Hour, Don McNeill's Breakfast Club and Ted Mack's Amateur Hour.

Through high school, she continued to star in theatricals and she attended Northwestern University, where she was a member of the sorority Kappa Alpha Theta but did not graduate. As part of a group known as the "Suttletones," they performed at the Mist, a Chicago nightclub, and went to Las Vegas for a promised club date which fell through after they arrived. They plugged ahead to Los Angeles and, through agent Georgia Lund, secured club dates in Newport Beach and Reno, where Ann-Margret had a chance encounter with Marilyn Monroe, who was on location for The Misfits. Monroe noticed the striking girl in a crowd of onlookers, then chatted privately with her, offering her encouragement.

The group finally arrived at The Dunes in Las Vegas, which also headlined Tony Bennett and Al Hirt at that time. George Burns heard of her performance and she auditioned for his annual holiday show, in which she and Burns did a soft-shoe routine. Variety proclaimed, "George Burns has a gold mine in Ann-Margret...she has a definite style of her own, which can easily guide her to star status".
==Recording career==

Ann-Margret began recording for RCA in 1961. Her first RCA recording was "Lost Love" from her debut album And Here She Is: Ann-Margret, produced in Nashville with Chet Atkins on guitar, the Jordanaires (Elvis Presley's backup singers), and the Anita Kerr Singers, with liner notes by mentor George Burns. She had a sexy throaty singing voice and RCA attempted to capitalize on the 'female Elvis' comparison by having her record a version of "Heartbreak Hotel" and other songs stylistically similar to Presley's. She scored the minor hit "I Just Don't Understand" (from her second LP) which entered the Billboard Top 40 in the third week of August 1961 and stayed six weeks, peaking at 17. The song was later covered in live performances by The Beatles, who never officially recorded any version of the song. Her only charting album was The Beauty and the Beard (1964) on which she was accompanied by trumpeter Al Hirt. She also sang at the Academy Awards presentation in 1962, singing the Oscar-nominated song "Bachelor in Paradise". Her contract with RCA ended in 1966. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, she had hits on the dance charts, the most successful being 1979's "Love Rush" which peaked at number eight on the disco/dance charts.
==Film career==
===1960s===

In 1961, at nineteen, she filmed a screen test at 20th Century Fox and was signed to a seven-year contract. Ann-Margret made her film début in a loan out to United Artists in Pocketful of Miracles, with Bette Davis. It was a remake of the 1933 movie Lady for a Day. Both versions were directed by Frank Capra.

Then came a 1962 remake of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical State Fair playing the "bad girl" role of Emily opposite Bobby Darin and Pat Boone. She had tested for the part of Margy, the "good girl," but she seemed too seductive to the studio bosses who decided on the switch. The two roles mimicked her real-life personality — shy and reserved off stage but wildly exuberant and sensuous on stage. As she summed up in her autobiography, she would easily transform herself from "Little Miss Lollipop to Sexpot-Banshee" once she stepped on stage and the music began.

Her next starring role, as the all-American teenager Kim from Sweet Apple, Ohio, in Bye Bye Birdie (1963) made her a major star. The premiere at Radio City Music Hall, 16 years after her first visit to the famed theater, was a smash hit—the highest first-week grossing film to date at that theater. Life magazine put her on the cover for the second time and announced that the "torrid dancing almost replaces the central heating in the theater". She was asked to sing "Baby, Won't You Please Come Home" at President John F. Kennedy's private birthday party at the Waldorf-Astoria, one year after Marilyn Monroe's famous "Happy Birthday".

In 1963, Ann-Margret guest-starred in a popular episode of the animated TV series The Flintstones, voicing Ann-Margrock, an animated version of herself. She sang the ballad "The Littlest Lamb" as a lullaby and the (literally) rock-ing song, "Ain't Gonna Be A Fool". Decades later, she recorded the theme song, a modified version of the Viva Las Vegas theme, to the live-action film The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas in character as Ann-Margrock.

While working on the film Once a Thief (1965), she met Roger Smith, who after his successful run on the private-eye television series 77 Sunset Strip was performing a live club show at the Hungry i on a bill with Bill Cosby and Don Adams. That meeting began their courtship, which met with resistance from her parents.

Ann-Margret starred in The Cincinnati Kid in 1965 opposite Steve McQueen. She also co-starred along with friend Dean Martin in the spy spoof Murderers' Row (1966).

Her redhead hair color (she is a "natural brunette") was the idea of Sydney Guilaroff, a hairdresser who changed the hair color of other famous actresses such as Lucille Ball.

She was offered the title role in Cat Ballou (1965) which would go to Jane Fonda, but her manager turned it down without telling her. In March 1966, Ann-Margret and entertainers Chuck Day and Mickey Jones teamed up for a USO tour to entertain U.S. servicemen in remote parts of Vietnam and other parts of Southeast Asia. She still has great affection for the veterans and refers to them as "my gentlemen." Ann-Margret, Day and Jones reunited in November 2005 for an encore of this tour for veterans and troops at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.

During a lull in her film career in the late 1960s, she performed live in Las Vegas, with her husband Smith (whom she had married in 1967) taking over as her manager after that engagement. Elvis and his entourage came to see her during the show's five-week run and to celebrate backstage. She followed up with a television special on December 1, 1968, starring Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Danny Thomas and Carol Burnett. Then she went back to Saigon as part of Hope's Christmas show. A second television special followed with Dean Martin and Lucille Ball. In 1970, she returned to films with R.P.M. and C.C. and Company.
===1970s and 1980s===

In 1971, she starred in Mike Nichols's Carnal Knowledge, playing the over-loving girlfriend of a viciously abusive Jack Nicholson and garnering a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

On September 9, 1972, while performing at Lake Tahoe, Nevada, she fell 22 feet from an elevated platform to the stage and suffered injuries including a broken left arm, cheekbone and jawbone. Smith flew a stolen plane from Burbank, California to Lake Tahoe and back to get his wife to surgeons at UCLA for treatment, which included meticulous facial reconstructive surgery that required wiring her mouth shut and putting her on a liquid diet. Unable to work for ten weeks, she ultimately returned to the stage almost back to normal.

Throughout the 1970s, Ann-Margret balanced her live musical performances with a string of dramatic film roles that played against her glamorous image. In 1973 she starred with John Wayne in The Train Robbers. Then came the musical Tommy in 1975, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. In addition, she has been nominated for ten Golden Globe Awards and has won five times, including her Best Actress for Tommy. She also did a string of successful TV specials, starting with The Ann-Margret Show for NBC in 1968.

In 1978, she co-starred with Anthony Hopkins in the horror/suspense thriller Magic.

In 1989, an illustration was done of Oprah Winfrey that graced the cover of TV Guide, and although the head was Oprah's, the body was referenced from a 1979 publicity shot of Ann-Margret. The illustration was rendered so tightly in color pencil by freelance artist Chris Notarile that most people thought it was a composite photograph.
===1990s and 2000s===

In 1993, she starred in the comedy Grumpy Old Men with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. Her character returned for Grumpier Old Men (1995), the sequel.

Ann-Margret published an autobiography in 1994 titled Ann-Margret: My Story (ISBN 0-399-13891-9), in which she publicly acknowledged her recovery from alcoholism. In 1995, she was chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history; she ranked 10th.

Ann-Margret had a supporting role in The Limey. Although her acting was considered superb, her entire performance was cut from the movie.

In an episode of the TV series Popular she played God.

In 2001, she made her first appearance in a stage musical, playing the character of brothel owner Mona Stangley in a new touring production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

Ann-Margret was raised Lutheran. She has been married to Roger Smith since May 8, 1967. He was an actor who later became her manager; Smith is now semi-retired due to myasthenia gravis.

She rode a 500cc Triumph T100C Tiger motorcycle in The Swinger (1966) and the same model fitted with a non-standard electric starter in her stage show. A keen motorcyclist, she was featured in Triumph Motorcycles' official advertisements in the '60s. She suffered three broken ribs and a fractured shoulder when she was thrown off a motorcycle she was driving in rural Minnesota in 2000.
