IMDb entry

Mai Shiranui (不知火舞, Shiranui Mai) is a character from both the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series of fighting games by SNK (now SNK Playmore). In her mind, Andy Bogard is her fiancé who studied Ninjutsu with her grandfather, Hanzo. The relationship between the two is often unclear and subliminal, usually on Andy's part, who at times seems to suppress his feelings for her in favor to treating her like a little sister.

Mai is very popular with fans, mostly due to her large breasted, highly attractive character design. Many see her as a prime example of this kind of depiction of women in video games and anime (predictably, Mai's breasts appear larger in art than her printed measurements). She typically wears exceptionally low-cut blouses, dresses, and clothing to maximize the exposure of her cleavage and most fight scenes involving Mai include several shots that focus especially on her chest and backside.

Trivia

  • Mai, over time, was converted into the main SNK sex symbol since her first appearance in Fatal Fury 2.
  • Despite being depicted otherwise, Mai has only the fourth largest bust size of all female King of Fighters characters, coming in at 87 cm (around 33-34 inches) compared to Angel and Shermie's 92 cm , Vice and Elisabeth Blanctorche 90 cm busts, and Blue Mary and Mature's 88 cm busts.
  • Mai was rated #4 in GameSpy.com's "Top Ten Babes in Games" feature and #5 in Game Informer's "Top Ten Hottest Girls of the 16-Bit era."
  • In the American and European SNES version of Fatal Fury 2 and Fatal Fury Special, Mai's thong was replaced with mini shorts and her breast bounce was removed.
  • In the US version of AOF2, Eiji Kisaragi's ending implies that he is in love with Mai Shiranui. The original Japanese version contains nothing of the sort - canon-wise. It is unknown whether the translators were unaware of the difference in time frames or simply ignored it, but for quite some time, many Western players took the ending seriously.
  • In the original Samurai Showdown for the Neo Geo, Mai makes a cameo in Haohmaru's ending.
  • In the same game, Mai also appears in Gen-an's ending. Despite that, she and Gen-an aren't related in any way. They just have the same last name.
  • Has her own Promotional Character Card and now a Starter Deck in the newly released SNK 'KOF 2006' set of the CCG, Universal Fighting System. Her deck contains a new character card and many of her trademark moves.
